PNG to WebP

Image

Drop PNG images and get much smaller WebPs back, transparency kept — converted on your device.

WebP is the format a fast website wants: the same picture as a PNG in a fraction of the bytes, and every current browser shows it. It is also what a page-speed report asks for when it says to serve images in next-gen formats. Drop the PNG files in and they come back as WebPs, the output already set to WebP and the button saying so.

Unlike a JPG, a WebP keeps a see-through background, so logos, icons and cut-out product photos stay transparent. Quality starts at 85%, which is hard to tell from the original; lower it for a smaller file, or set a target size and let the tool find the quality that fits. The size the files will come to is shown before you convert. In Safari, whose own encoder cannot write WebP, the conversion is done by a WebP encoder that runs in the page, from Alvseike — still on your device.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller is a WebP than a PNG?

For a photograph or a detailed picture, often several times smaller. For a flat logo the saving is smaller. The size each file will come to is shown before you download, so you can see it for your own pictures.

Does WebP keep a transparent background?

Yes. WebP keeps transparency, so a logo or a cut-out stays see-through — the reason to choose it over JPG for these.

Will my site's images look worse as WebP?

At the default 85% quality the difference is very hard to see. WebP here is lossy, like JPG: it keeps a close likeness in fewer bytes. Lower the quality for smaller files, or raise it towards 100% if a picture has fine detail you need to keep.

Does it work in Safari and on an iPhone?

Yes. Safari's own encoder cannot write WebP, so there the conversion is done by a WebP encoder that runs inside the page, loaded from Alvseike — the pictures still never leave your device.

Are my images uploaded?

No. They are read and converted in your own browser, and saved straight to your device.
