Add Page Numbers to PDF numbers the pages of a PDF — a report before it goes to print, a thesis, a contract whose pages have to be referred to, a bundle of documents for a meeting. Choose what is written (1, Page 1, Page 1 of 12, 1 / 12, or your own words such as Side 1 av 12), where it goes (any corner, or centred at the top or the foot), the number to start from, and how many pages at the front to leave without a number, such as a cover and a contents page. For a document printed on both sides, numbers in a side corner can move to the outer edge on facing pages. The preview is the page itself, numbered exactly as it will be saved, and you can step through the pages to see each one. The numbers are added in your browser: the PDF is never uploaded, and everything else in it — its text, links and form fields — stays as it was.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to add page numbers?

No. The numbers are written into the PDF in your own browser, and the file is saved straight to your device.

Can I leave the cover page without a number?

Yes. Set how many pages at the front to leave out — one for a cover, two for a cover and a contents page — and numbering begins after them, from the number you choose. To have the first numbered page say 3, set Start at to 3.

Can it write Page 1 of 10?

Yes: choose Page 1 of 10, or 1 / 10. Or write your own words with {n} for the number and {total} for the last number — Side {n} av {total} gives Side 1 av 10.

Where can the numbers go?

Any corner, or centred at the top or the foot, at the distance from the edge you choose. For a document printed on both sides, tick Outer corner on facing pages and a number in a side corner moves to the outside edge on even pages, as in a book.

What about pages that are landscape or turned?

Each page is numbered as it is shown: a landscape page, or one stored turned, gets its number at the foot you see when you read it, the right way up.

Does the rest of the PDF change?

No. The numbers are added on top of each page; the text stays searchable, and links and form fields keep working.
