Word to PDF

Word to PDF turns a Word document into a PDF to send — a CV for an application, a contract to sign, a report for a client — without Word, without an account, and without the document leaving your computer. The .docx is read in your browser and its pages laid out there: headings, paragraphs, bold and italic, lists with their numbers, tables with their borders and shading, pictures, headers and footers with page numbers, and links that can still be clicked. Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New are drawn in open fonts made to the very same letter widths, so lines break where Word broke them; any other font is drawn in the nearest of those, and the tool says which. The preview is the PDF itself, page by page, before anything is saved, and a short list says what is not as in Word — a text box, a chart, an equation — so nothing is missing without you knowing. The PDF keeps its text as text: it can be searched, copied and read aloud.

How to use Word to PDF

  1. 1
    Add the Word document

A .docx file — the format Word has saved in since 2007. It is read and laid out in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

  2. 2
    Check the pages

The preview is the PDF itself, page by page. Beside it: which fonts were used, and anything that is not as it was in Word.

  3. 3
    Save PDF

The PDF is saved under the document's name, its text searchable, its fonts inside, its links still working.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Word document uploaded to make the PDF?

No. The document is read and the PDF made in your own browser, and saved straight to your device. A CV, a contract or a client's report stays where it is.

Will the PDF look exactly like the document in Word?

Close, for most documents — and the preview shows it before you save. The pages are laid out here, not by Word, in open fonts drawn to the same letter widths as Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New — so a line breaks where Word broke it. Another font is drawn in the nearest of those by kind, and there a line can end a word earlier or later. Text boxes, shapes, charts and embedded objects are not drawn, and the tool lists any it finds.

Do I need Microsoft Word installed?

No. The .docx file is read directly — it is a zip of the document's text, styles and pictures — and laid out in your browser. Word, Pages, Google Docs and LibreOffice can all save a .docx.

What about an old .doc file?

A .doc from before Word 2007 is a different format, and is not read here. Open it in Word, Pages or LibreOffice, save it as .docx, and convert that.

Are links, headers and page numbers kept?

Yes. Web and email links can still be clicked in the PDF, headers and footers are on every page, and page numbers — Page 3 of 12 — are counted for the PDF's own pages. Headings become the PDF's bookmarks. Footnotes are gathered at the end of the document.

Can the text in the PDF be searched and copied?

Yes. The text is written as text, in fonts embedded in the file, so it can be searched, selected and copied — it is not a picture of the page.
