A GIF is the one moving picture that plays by itself everywhere — in a chat, an email, a README, a slide — which is why people still cut them out of videos. Drop the clip in and drag the two ends of the timeline to the moment you want; the first three seconds are selected to begin with. Then choose how big it should be and how smoothly it should move, and press the button.

Those two choices are the whole trade. A GIF stores every frame as a full picture and has no sound, so size and frame rate decide the file: 480 pixels on the long edge at 10 frames a second is the usual balance, and three or four seconds is about as long as a GIF should be. The tool never enlarges a small clip, and says when a size you pick will be heavy to share. A caption can be drawn onto it, in a choice of fonts. The video is read in your browser — a big file has no upload to wait for, and it never leaves your device.

How it works

  1. 1
    Drop your video

MP4, MOV or WebM. It opens in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

  2. 2
    Pick the moment

Drag the ends of the timeline to where the GIF should start and stop.

  3. 3
Set size and frame rate, then make it

Smaller and fewer frames a second mean a lighter GIF. Add a caption if you want one, and download.

Frequently asked questions

How long can the GIF be?

As long as the part of the timeline you select, but a GIF gets heavy fast: every frame is stored as a whole picture. Three or four seconds is the usual length. For anything longer, a short MP4 is far smaller — the Video Compressor makes one.

How do I make the GIF file smaller?

Three ways, in order of effect: a shorter selection, a smaller size on the long edge, and a lower frame rate. Then set Quality to Small file, which uses fewer colours. The frame count and dimensions are shown under the preview as you change them.

Does the GIF keep the sound?

No. The GIF format has no audio at all. If you need the sound, keep it as a video.

Which video formats can I use?

Whatever your browser can play: MP4 and WebM everywhere, and MOV from an iPhone in most browsers. The video is decoded by the browser itself, so nothing needs installing.

Can I add text to the GIF?

Yes. Type a caption and it is drawn onto every frame, with a choice of font, size and position. Leave it empty for none.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The frames are taken from the video in your browser and the GIF is built on your device.
