50 KB is a common limit for the photo on visa, passport-renewal, exam and job applications. A photo straight from a phone is a few megabytes. Drop it in and it comes back at 50 KB or less, at the highest quality that fits.

A portrait cropped to the size forms ask for usually fits at its full size in Chrome: measured, a 1200 × 1200 portrait came back at 49 KB, every pixel kept. An uncropped phone photo is reduced in pixels as well, and the result shows the new size — 4032 × 3024 became 1763 × 1322. Safari's own encoder makes larger files, so there the portrait came back at 905 × 905. Crop it to the face first with Smart Cropper and more of the 50 KB goes where it matters. The photo stays in your browser.

Need a different limit? Image Compressor takes any target, in KB or MB — whatever the form asks for.

Frequently asked questions

Will my passport photo keep its size in pixels?

In Chrome, if it is cropped to the usual sizes, usually: a 1200 × 1200 portrait came back at 49 KB at its full size. Safari's encoder needs fewer pixels for the same 50 KB — that portrait came back at 905 × 905. A whole phone photo is reduced in both, and the result always shows the new width and height.

The form also wants a plain white background — can I get one?

Not in this tool. Background Remover takes the background out in your browser; put the photo on white there, then compress it here.

Is 50 KB counted as 50,000 bytes?

Yes, as most forms count it. A file under 50,000 bytes also passes a form that counts 51,200.

Will the photo look worse than the original?

Slightly, up close: 50 KB is a small budget. The tool keeps the highest quality that fits, rather than a fixed setting that might lose more than it has to.

Is my ID photo sent anywhere?

No. It is compressed on your device and downloaded straight back; nothing is uploaded.
