Silence Remover

Video

Cut the silences out of a video or a recording, found by loudness in any language. Every cut is shown and can be kept. On your device.

Loading tool…

Silence Remover cuts the dead air out of a video or a recording — the wait before you start, the pauses between takes, the quiet after you finish. It finds silence by how loud the sound is, not by transcribing it, so it works in any language and downloads no speech model. A threshold is suggested from your own recording's quiet and loud parts; then set how quiet counts as silence, how long a pause must be before it is cut, and how much room is left around speech. Every cut is marked on a timeline, where a click keeps it, and the player skips the cuts so you hear the result before anything is written. A video is cut frame for frame, with a short fade at each join so nothing clicks, and saved as MP4 or WebM; a recording is saved as MP3. The file is read and written on your device and never uploaded.

How to use Silence Remover

  1. 1
    Add the video or recording

An MP4, MOV or WebM video, or MP3, M4A, WAV or FLAC sound. It is read on your device, a piece at a time.

  2. 2
    Check the cuts

The silences are marked on a timeline. Set how quiet and how long a silence must be, click any cut to keep it, and play the file with the cuts skipped.

  3. 3
    Remove the silences

A video is cut frame for frame and saved as MP4 or WebM; a recording is saved as MP3.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work in any language?

Yes. Silence is found by how loud the sound is, not from a transcript, so the language, the accent and the voice make no difference — and no speech model is downloaded to do it.

Will it cut off the start or end of my words?

It leaves a little of each silence beside the speech — 0.15 seconds unless you change 'Keep around speech' — and fades each join over about a hundredth of a second so cuts do not click. If a cut still sounds tight, give it more room, or click it to keep it.

Can I keep some of the pauses?

Yes. Pauses shorter than 'Longer than' (0.6 seconds to begin with) are never cut, and any cut can be kept with a click on the timeline or in the list of every cut. Playing the file skips only the cuts that will be made.

Does it remove 'um' and 'uh'?

No. It removes silence, not words: to a loudness meter a filler sound is speech. It does not remove background noise either; in a noisy room, raise 'Quieter than' until the pauses are marked.

Is my video uploaded to cut it?

No. The file is read, measured, cut and written in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere. Long recordings are read a piece at a time, so an hour of sound is never held in memory at once.

What does it save, and does it count as a run?

A video comes back as MP4 — or WebM, if you choose it or your browser cannot write MP4 — at its own picture size; a recording comes back as an MP3. Each file written is one run of the daily allowance; finding and checking the cuts is free.
